The Story

Silentó, born Ricky Hawk, was a teenager in Atlanta when he recorded "Watch Me (Whip / Nae Nae)" and uploaded it in 2015. The song bolted a set of existing dance moves to a minimal beat and a set of instructions, and it became one of the defining viral records of the decade, peaking at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100.

What makes him unusual on this site is the scale of the gap. "Watch Me" sits near 440 million streams. His next most-played track, a Spanish-language version of the very same song, does not reach two million. Once you set aside re-recordings of the hit, there is effectively nothing else in the catalogue drawing an audience.

That produces one of the most extreme ratios anywhere in our data, well into the hundreds against a threshold of 5.0. Most certified artists here sit between 5 and 30.

So Silentó is a certified one-hit wonder by our measure, and one of the clearest examples the numbers produce. He released further singles after 2015 but none found an audience, and he has not charted since. The record is a snapshot of a specific moment when a dance, a phone camera and a school playground could carry a song further than any label campaign.
