Boy Meets Girl were an American duo, George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, who were already successful before they had a hit of their own. As songwriters, they wrote two of Whitney Houston's biggest singles, "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody".
Their own moment came in 1988 with "Waiting for a Star to Fall", a shimmering pop song they wrote after watching a falling star at a Whitney Houston concert. They had offered it to Houston, but her label passed, so the pair recorded it themselves and watched it climb into the US top five.
No other release of theirs came close. On streaming, "Waiting for a Star to Fall" sits near 119 million plays, while their next track barely registers. The ratio runs into the hundreds, one of the most extreme in our data.
By our measure Boy Meets Girl are a certified one-hit wonder, with a lovely irony attached. As writers they helped define another artist's superstar catalogue, yet under their own name they are remembered for a single song, the one the superstar turned down.
