WALK THE MOON are an American pop-rock band from Cincinnati who already had a buzzy indie following, thanks to the earlier single "Anna Sun", before they landed a true blockbuster. "Shut Up and Dance", released in 2014, was a gleaming, 80s-indebted feel-good anthem that became a global smash and an inescapable presence on radio and in adverts.
The band, whose name nods to a song by The Police, were known for their colourful, face-painted live shows and became a festival favourite. They kept recording and touring with a loyal fanbase, but nothing matched the reach of that one euphoric chorus.
On streaming, "Shut Up and Dance" sits near 2.3 billion plays, while their next most-streamed track, "Anna Sun", trails at around 174 million. That puts the ratio above 13, well past our 5.0 line.
By our measure WALK THE MOON are a certified one-hit wonder. It is the modern feel-good pattern in miniature: a band with real songs and a real following whose single most joyous track pulled so far ahead that it came to stand for everything. The rest of the catalogue rewards a listen, but the world only wants the chorus.
