The Story

MKTO were an American pop duo, Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller, who met as young actors before turning to music. Their breakthrough, "Classic", released in 2013, was a sunny, brass-flecked pop-rap song packed with retro name-checks, and its feel-good bounce made it a genuine international hit.

The duo released more music and had a loyal young fanbase, with follow-up "American Dream" finding some success, but nothing approached the reach of their debut single.

On streaming, "Classic" sits near 1.7 billion plays, while their next most-streamed track trails at around 127 million. That puts the ratio above 13, far past our 5.0 line.

By our measure MKTO are a certified one-hit wonder. Theirs is a familiar story for the early-2010s pop wave: a duo with one impeccably catchy, of-its-moment single that travelled far beyond the rest of their catalogue, and which still pulls the overwhelming share of their streams today. Fittingly for a song called "Classic", it has comfortably outlasted everything around it. A decade on it remains the duo's calling card, the track that introduced them and the one most listeners have stayed with, while the rest of the catalogue faded gently into the background.
