J.J. Fad were an American female rap group from Rialto, California, and they hold a real place in hip-hop history. "Supersonic", their rapid-fire 1988 single, was one of the first releases on Eazy-E's Ruthless Records and was produced by a young Dr. Dre, DJ Yella, and Arabian Prince.
The song went gold and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance, making J.J. Fad the first all-female rap group to be nominated for a Grammy. Its commercial success also helped fund and establish Ruthless at a pivotal moment, just before the label changed rap forever.
That legacy is bigger than the streaming numbers, which is part of the point. "Supersonic" sits near 21 million plays, modest by modern standards but far ahead of anything else the group recorded; their next track trails well behind. The ratio lands above 6, past our 5.0 line.
By our measure J.J. Fad are a certified one-hit wonder. It is worth remembering that influence and streaming totals are different things. A group can leave a mark on a whole genre while, decades later, the public streams just one of their songs.
