The Story

Hoobastank are an American rock band from California who came up in the early-2000s post-grunge wave, but their lasting mark is a single song that softened their sound and conquered the radio. "The Reason", released in 2004, was an apologetic power ballad that became one of the biggest rock crossovers of its year.

The band had a real career around it, with earlier rock singles like "Crawling in the Dark" finding an audience, and they kept recording for years. "The Reason" even became a staple for talent-show contestants and wedding bands, the kind of ubiquity that fixes a song in the public memory. Yet nothing else approached its reach.

On streaming, "The Reason" sits near 1.5 billion plays, while their next most-streamed track, "Crawling in the Dark", trails at around 183 million. That puts the ratio above 8, comfortably past our 5.0 line.

By our measure Hoobastank are a certified one-hit wonder. It is a familiar pattern for the era: a rock band whose hardest-charging songs built a fanbase, but whose one tender ballad is the track the wider world remembers.
