The Story

Grizzly Bear are an American indie band from Brooklyn, and their inclusion here is a textbook example of why we treat this label as a measurement, not a verdict. They are one of the most critically admired acts of their generation, with a run of lush, intricate albums and a reputation as a musician's band. They are, in every artistic sense, the opposite of a novelty.

But streaming concentrates their audience around one song. "Two Weeks", from their acclaimed 2009 album Veckatimest, is a gorgeous, piano-led piece of chamber pop that became their calling card and reached far beyond their usual listenership.

On streaming, "Two Weeks" sits near 327 million plays, while their next most-streamed track, "Yet Again", trails at around 38 million. That puts the ratio above 8, past our 5.0 line.

So by our strict, numbers-only measure, Grizzly Bear register as a certified one-hit wonder, and we flag the caveat as firmly as we can. This is a band with a deep, cohesive, hugely respected catalogue, the kind that rewards listening album by album. It is only that one luminous song found a wider audience than the rest, and on streams it has simply pulled far enough ahead to tip the maths.
