David Soul was an American actor, later based in Britain, who is best remembered for starring in the television series Starsky & Hutch. At the height of that fame he turned to music and scored one enormous hit. "Don't Give Up on Us", released in 1976, is a soft, pleading pop ballad, and it became a number-one single on both sides of the Atlantic, an unusual crossover for a working actor.
Soul had a couple of further hits in the UK, but his recording career rested squarely on that one tender ballad, and to most listeners it is the only song of his they know.
On streaming, "Don't Give Up on Us" sits near 93 million plays, while his next most-streamed track trails at around seven million. That sends the ratio above 12, far past our 5.0 line.
By our measure David Soul is a certified one-hit wonder, with the obvious caveat that music was a sideline to his acting career. It is simply that one heartfelt, perfectly-timed ballad, riding the wave of his television stardom, became a transatlantic number one and has stood far ahead of everything else he recorded.
