Blue Öyster Cult have one song that outgrew everything else they did, and a comedy sketch that made it larger still. "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", released in 1976, reached number twelve on the US Billboard Hot 100, and Saturday Night Live's "more cowbell" sketch in 2000 handed it a second life that has never really ended. It sits near 756 million streams.
Behind it, "Burnin' for You" is past 226 million, and "Godzilla" remains a live staple with a substantial streaming audience of its own.
That gives a ratio near 3.3, under the 5.0 we require. The second song is doing about a third of the work of the first.
So Blue Öyster Cult are not a one-hit wonder by our measure. They released a long run of albums through the 1970s and 1980s and still tour. What the number reflects is that "Reaper" reaches an audience far beyond the one that knows the band, helped along by a sketch most of its listeners have seen more recently than they have heard the album it came from.
