Blind Melon were an American alternative rock band whose breakthrough came with "No Rain", a sunny, loose-limbed single from their 1992 debut album. The song became a phenomenon largely thanks to its video, in which a young girl in a bee costume searches for somewhere she belongs, an image that became one of the defining clips of the early-90s alternative boom.
The band's story turned tragic. Singer Shannon Hoon died of a drug overdose in 1995, cutting short a group that many felt was only beginning to show its range. That loss is a large part of why "No Rain" stands so alone.
On streaming, the hit sits near 617 million plays, while their next most-streamed track, "Change", trails around 102 million. That puts the ratio just above 6, past our 5.0 line.
By our measure Blind Melon are a certified one-hit wonder, though theirs is a case where the label carries real sadness. We will never know what a fuller catalogue might have looked like. What remains is one warm, melancholy song and the bee-costumed girl who made it unforgettable.
