The Story

Groove Theory were an American duo, made up of singer Amel Larrieux and producer Bryce Wilson, who helped define the smooth, sophisticated sound of mid-1990s neo-soul with one gorgeous hit. "Tell Me", released in 1995, is a warm, mellow R&B song with an irresistibly tender hook, and it became their signature, a classic of the era's quiet-storm radio.

The duo did not last long together, though Amel Larrieux went on to a respected solo career in soul, and no other Groove Theory track approached the reach of "Tell Me".

On streaming, "Tell Me" sits near 147 million plays, while their next most-streamed track trails at around four million. That sends the ratio above 36, far past our 5.0 line.

By our measure Groove Theory are a certified one-hit wonder, with the caveat that their singer went on to a deeper solo body of work. As a duo, though, the numbers are clear: one silky, perfectly poised neo-soul song became their defining moment, a track still beloved by fans of the genre that stands far ahead of everything else released under the name.
